Top 7 Cooling Mats, Pads, & Beds Review

These are 7 of the best cooling products on the market!

1. Furhaven L-Shaped Chaise Cooling Bed

Furhaven Goliath Chaise Lounge Dog Bed

Luxurious faux fur & suede cover

Bolster Design

Cooling Gel Foam & Orthopedic Foam

This super stylish bed will also keep your pooch exceptionally cool in the summer months. This bed also comes in various color combinations to best suit your home.

The outer cover is made of a velvety-soft fabric that resembles suede & is lined with faux fur. This provides your dog with a soft & comforting sleep surface.

The middle layer is made of a cooling gel foam that will wick away your dog’s body heat while still keeping the bed a few degrees below ambient temperature. You’ll find that your dog will keep going back to this cozy yet cooling bed!

The last layer is a padding layer made of medical-grade orthopedic foam. This provides instant relief for your pup, as it can help alleviate symptoms of arthritis & prevent hip dysplasia.

Customer reviews are stellar for this product. However, some customers said that there should have been some sort of rubber or traction on the bottom of the bed to prevent slipping on tile & hardwood.

Also, the sellers have stated that this bed is not suitable for chewers. This is because aggressive chewer dogs can bite through the soft foam layer & rip the bed apart.

Considering the affordable price, the ample features, and the 4.5-out-of-5-star rating, this is probably the best cooling bed available on the market. Plus, this bed is covered under a 90-day warranty in case you receive a defect, or your dog refuses to sleep on it!

  • Durable faux fur & suede lining, in multiple color combinations
  • Cooling gel layer to wick away dog’s body heat
  • Thick orthopedic foam layer for additional joint support
  • Bolster for neck support & comfort

  • Not suitable for avid chewers
  • No traction on the bottom.

2. Sisrol Pet Cooling Mat

Sisrol Pet Cooling Mat

Low cost but very Effective

Wide Range of Colors

Reversible: Ice Silk & mesh fabric

If you don’t want to break the bank, or you’re only looking for something temporary, I recommend this cooling mat. This mat still has all the great features you’re looking for but at a low cost.

This product is made of 3 layers. One side is a breathable mesh fabric & the other side is an ice-silk cooling material. In the center, there is a thin cotton padding layer for some additional comfort.

The two different layers mean that this bed is reversible; based on the weather, simply choose the side you prefer. For example, if the ambient temperature is very warm, you might keep the ice-silk side up.

All these layers are made of 100% non-toxic materials, so it’s safe even if your dog loves to gnaw on their bed like a bone!

This mat also comes in a large range of colors, so you can choose one that matches your decor & preferences the best.

The pad also has double-fine Stitching, which means that it is resistant to a slight amount of scratching & nibbling, so it’s perfect for little pups who can’t do much damage yet.

Amazon reviewers have said that this bed is super easy to clean because you can just toss the whole thing in the washing machine!

Customer reviews also state that this bed isn’t very cold but is cold to the touch. Therefore, this product shouldn’t be used in intense heat but rather when it is slightly warm outside to provide your dog with some extra cooling.

Also, there were some complaints that the pad was too thin to serve as a bed and should rather be used more like a throw blanket on top of a regular bed or pad.

Therefore, we recommend this mat to be used with a bed or pad and only in slightly hot temperatures.

  • 100% Non-Toxic
  • Reversible- Made of 2 different materials for different air temperatures
  • Comes in a variety of colors
  • Very easy to clean
  • Double Stitching provides some tear-resistance

  • It isn’t colder than the ambient temperature; it is just a little cool to the touch.
  • Very thin, not suitable for older dogs with joint problems

3. The Green Pet Shop Cool Pet Pad

The Green Pet Shop Cool Pet Pad

Pressure Activated Gel Technology

Easy to Clean Cover

Low Recharge Time

This extra-large size pad is an excellent option if you live in an area that gets very hot in the summers, thanks to its super effective pressure-activated gel.

The Green Pet Shop Cooling mat has patented self-cooling technology that automatically wicks away heat when pressure is applied. Therefore, if your dog is lying on the pad, the non-toxic cooling gel will stimulate and start to cool your pup down.

This means that the pad is super useful in hot weather. You can use it on the kennel floor, in a crate, or even on your sofa to provide instant relief for your pooch.

The pad is waterproof & really easy to clean; simply rub it down with a damp cloth.

Reviewers stated that since the pad needs 15 minutes of non-use to recharge, it can get a bit impractical and isn’t suitable for long-term usage.

Also, there is a lack of padding, which means that you must place it on top of a bed or sofa; older dogs shouldn’t be using this alone as a bed.

Furthermore, there is also a lack of color options, which isn’t ideal if you want a pad that perfectly suits your home.

We would recommend this pad as a supplemental cooling measure for the super hot summers, but not as a bed.

  • Very easy to clean
  • Pressure Activated Gel Technology is very effective.
  • Quick to recharge
  • Competitively priced

  • Small color range
  • Needs to recharge = continuous relief from the heat isn’t possible
  • No padding, so not suitable for dogs with joint issues.

4. Rywell Cooling Mat

Rywell Cooling Mat

Special Thermochromic Fabric

Easy to Clean & Durable Cover

Non-Slip Bottom Surface

This is definitely an interesting option if you’re looking for cooling mats. What’s unique about this design is the thermochromic fabric. Thermochromic basically means temperature + color; essentially, it is a change in color caused by temperature.

The top of this mat becomes white when it is warm. So, if your dog lays down on it, you will see a white imprint left behind by his warm body. This is a brilliant way to see the heat absorption process taking place!

You can also use it as a metric to see how hot your dog is. If the outline becomes completely white and the design disappears, then your dog may be overheating. If the whole mat is completely white, then you need to let it recharge in a cool area.

The mat is filled with arc-chill natural cooling fabric, which keeps the mat cool & wicks away your pup’s body heat. This material is non-toxic. Also, you don’t have to worry about this fabric leaking out like you would with cooling gel.

Arc-chill natural cooling fabric can reduce your dog’s temperature by 5-10 degrees Fahrenheit.

This fabric is covered with a puncture-resistant material, which makes the mat very durable.

This mat has a non-slip surface at the bottom & can also function as a pee pad, making it perfect for young puppies.

Some pet parents complained that the nylon cover stains too easily.

Also, they complained that the mat could become damaged if you leave it out in the sun; in this case, the white color becomes permanent & does not change back to blue, no matter how cold you make it.

  • Easy to clean, the sturdy nylon cover – also acts as a pee pad
  • The thermochromic cover tells you the temperature of your dog & if you need to recharge the mat
  • Non-slip surface
  • Durable cover

  • Easy to stain
  • Can become sun damaged if left out for too long

5. Furhaven Microvelvet Luxe Lounger

FurHaven Microvelvet Luxe Lounger Pet Bed

Unique & Accessible Curved Design

Removable Cover

Cooling Gel + Orthopedic Foam

This is another bed from Furhaven, but it is more of a premium bed due to the unique design & exceptional materials. The price point is also a bit higher than the other beds for this reason.

This bed comes with an outer zippered cover. This exterior material can be washed with detergent in a machine, which makes cleanup super easy.

There are two inner layers. First is a layer of pressure-activated cooling gel, which acts to remove your dog’s body heat & stay cool. The second is a layer of medical-grade memory foam. This gives your dog some much-needed cushioning.

The design is fairly basic but still keeps your dog’s needs in mind. It is essentially a rectangle but with 2 raised ends. These raised ends serve as pillows & provide your pooch with neck support. Also, since there aren’t any bolsters, sitting on this bed is a very easy process & can even be done by a very old dog with joint or mobility issues.

Some pet owners complained that the outer cover fabric was low-quality & didn’t fit the bed well. Also, there were some negative reviews about the firmness of the bed; some believed that it was too firm for a dog, and therefore their pets wouldn’t sleep on it.

So, we would recommend this bed if you have an older dog who enjoys sleeping on firm surfaces & overheats easily.

  • No bolsters, so it is easy to climb in & out
  • Effective pressure-activated cooling gel
  • Layer of orthopedic memory foam
  • Zippered & machine washable outer cover

  • Excessively firm- not ideal for puppies who like soft surfaces
  • The cover isn’t great quality & doesn’t fit well
  • Higher price point

6. Empsign Waterproof Dog Bed

Empsign Waterproof Dog Bed

Reversible: Cooling Side & Plush Warm Side

Removable & Machine-Washable Cover

High-Density Foam

This Empsign Waterproof dog bed is a fantastic option for a year-round bed that provides your pet with some protection from the weather.

A unique aspect of this bed is the reversible cover. One side is made of a cool, dry, and breathable canvas for the summer. The other side is made of a short, durable, fluffy coil that will trap your dog’s body heat in the winter.

The inside of the bed is made with sturdy, 3-inch thick, high-density foam. This is an airy & breathable material that also doesn’t become compressed with use.

The outer layer is machine washable & zippered. Reviews state that this cover is very easy to remove & maintains its structural integrity in the washing machine.

However, some customers complained that the foam isn’t actually 3 inches thick but is more like 1-2 inches thick. Therefore, they had to use towels and egg crate foam to fill out the cover.

Also, some Amazon customers have complained that the zipper of the washable cover broke fairly easily in the washing machine.

  • Reversible outer layers: One for summer & one for winter
  • Zippered Machine-Washable Cover
  • Very affordable price
  • Stuffed with a high-density foam that doesn’t collapse easily

  • Incorrect Dimensions – The bed is smaller than listed.
  • The cover is not durable & can be torn by long nails or teeth.

7. Coleman Comfort Cooling Gel Pad

Coleman Comfort Cooling Gel Pad

Puncture Resistant Waterproof Cover

Non-Toxic Pressure Activated Gel

5-10 Degrees Cooler than Ambient Temperature

The Coleman Comfort Cooling Gel Pad is a great option if you’re looking for an affordable yet effective cooling gel pad. With 4.2 out of 5 stars on Amazon, this product is clearly a high-quality solution for the blazing hot summers!

These pads come in a wide variety of colors to perfectly suit your home aesthetic. The outer cover is a puncture-resistant material that is cool to the touch.

The pad is lined with a pressure-resistant cooling gel. As soon as your dog lays down on it, this effective gel becomes active and starts to absorb your pup’s body heat.

This means that you don’t have to keep it in the fridge & you only need to take it out when you need it. It needs around 20 minutes every few hours to “recharge” in a cool place, but no electricity is required.

This gel is also non-toxic, so don’t be too alarmed if your dog has managed to rip a hole into it! Just throw it out & your dog should be alright.

This mat is super easy to clean. All you have to do is wipe it down with a damp cloth or add a gentle cleaner if your pup has urinated on it.

It’s also easy to store because it is segmented. Simply fold along those segments to store them.

Some Amazon reviewers have stated that this bed is not actually puncture-resistant. Instead, they found that the cover opens up near the seams if their dog is continuously chewing on it.

I wouldn’t recommend this pad for puppies who still love to tear up their beds & aren’t completely potty trained.

  • Very easy to clean- just wipe it down.
  • Easy to store it for the summers, folds down to ¼ of the original size
  • Attractive puncture-resistant outer cover
  • Filled with pressure-activated cooling gel

  • Prone to leakage
  • Cover isn’t as durable as the sellers claim

Features of a cooling bed

What works for one dog likely won’t work for yours. You need to choose a bed that suits your lifestyle, the weather of the area you live in, and your dog’s behavior.

Therefore, consider these features & see which ones are the most important for you. Based on that, you can choose the bed that best suits your requirements.

The length of the mat should be a couple of inches longer than your dog’s nose-to-tail length. This way, if they sprawl out, each part of their body can be placed on the mat, and they will feel some heat relief.

The width should be 8-10 inches greater than the distance between your dog’s shoulders. This is known as the wither’s length. It should be wider if your dog curls up when he lays down.

If you’re confused between sizes, I recommend always sizing up.

Cushioning is a crucial factor regarding cooling beds. Some dogs require a lot of cushioning because they may be prone to joint pain or they may be suffering from hip dysplasia or arthritis. Regardless, a bed with ample padding is necessary for many dogs.

If your dog can’t sleep on a hard surface, consider buying a bed, not a mat or pad. Mats and pads typically have little to no padding on them and are mainly kept on top of other surfaces, like a bed or the sofa.

On the other hand, a bed usually has a good amount of cotton or foam as padding, making it great for older dogs.

Look for beds with orthopedic foam. This is because low-quality beds filled with “foam” are just filled with egg crate foam, which will easily collapse & won’t provide your dog with any support.

Memory foam will support the natural shape of their body as they sleep to reduce any pain or discomfort.

Support (Bolsters)

Bolsters are long & sturdy pillows that are on the side of the bed. They are a good alternative for regular pillows because your dog might think they are toys & destroy them.

We would recommend a bed with bolsters if your dog loves to sleep with its head elevated.

However, bolsters can make a bed difficult to enter for dogs with mobility issues. So, if you have an older pooch or a dog who has trouble raising its legs, then try a bed with bolsters on only half of the bed.

Cooling Material

Rywell Self Cooling Mat for Dogs

There are many different cooling materials available, and each of them is good for different things. The most effective material is definitely pressure-activated gel. This material doesn’t take long to recharge & keeps your dog the coolest.

We recommend pressure-activated gel if you live in a very warm climate and you need a heavy-duty solution for the hot summer months.

However, if you have a puppy or a pooch who loves to chew up their mats, then we don’t recommend a gel mat, in case they can rip a hole in it & ingest some of the chemicals. Instead, look for a mat or pad covered with a cooling fabric.

Cleanability is crucial to prevent skin infections & the spread of ticks and fleas. Look for a mat with a removable outer cover that can be machine-washed. Bonus points if it’s zippered!

If you have a puppy who isn’t fully potty trained yet, try out a bed with a waterproof cover.

This summer, protect your pup with a high-quality, inexpensive cooling mat, pad, or bed!

We recommend the Furhaven L-Shaped Chaise Cooling Bed thanks to its soft orthopedic foam paired with the cooling foam, the half bolster design, low price point, and 90-day warranty.

A close contender is definitely the Rywell Cooling Mat, thanks to the affordable cost and the unique color-changing design that tells you exactly when you need to recharge it.

If you are still confused on which product to buy, consider aspects like the cost, cooling material, and design to choose the best bed for your needs.
