How I Socialized My Puppy

One of the most crucial aspects of puppy ownership is ensuring that your little bundle of fluff is properly socialized.

Many of the problem dogs that are surrendered to rescues and shelters behave the way they do simply because they weren’t socialized properly as puppies. The result is a dog that’s not a pleasure to have around and can be a downright nuisance.

You don’t want to make the same mistake, so here are some personal tips on how I socialized my puppy that I think might work for you, too!

Get Out And About

Now, just because you can’t put your puppy down on the ground until his course of vaccinations is complete at around 12 weeks doesn’t mean you can’t start showing your new furry friend plenty of unfamiliar sights and sounds.

I began by taking little Raffles to our local dog-friendly coffee shop, where he could sit on my lap on his blanket with one of his toys while I had a coffee. Of course, the cute puppy attracted plenty of attention, and lots of people stopped to pet him.

The next stop was our local squash club bar. There was plenty going on there, with a pool competition in full swing, several (vaccinated) dogs, and some little kids, too. 

At first, my puppy was quite shy, hiding his head in my arms and sleeping through most of the excitement. But by his second week with me, Raffles was loving the attention. By the time the little guy could go down on the ground and meet other dogs, he was a confident, friendly puppy who loved to meet and greet people, including children.

However, when it came to meeting other dogs, Raffles didn’t quite know what to do. After all, he’d only known his siblings and Mom until that point in his short life. At first, when we met another dog at the park, my puppy hid behind me or tried to climb up my legs, crying so that I would pick him up.

But once a few pups had been encountered, the crying stopped, and all Raffles wanted to do was play with every dog he met! Now, a few older pups didn’t appreciate being jumped on by a puppy and growled at him. So, Mr. Confident started barking back!

I firmly believe that most dogs are made the way they are through the experiences they have had in their formative years. So, by making the effort to socialize your new Goldendoodle puppy from the get-go, you’re setting him up for a happy, secure future.
