What Are Dog Crates Used For?

Crate training has benefits for dogs of all ages, from puppies to seniors. We recommend that you start crate training your Goldendoodle puppy as soon as you get him home. In fact, many reputable Goldendoodle breeders begin the first stages of crate training their puppies before the pups go to their new homes, giving you a head start.

Puppies

Crates can keep curious puppies safely contained when you’re not around to keep an eye on your furry friend.

Dogs are instinctively reluctant to soil their sleeping areas, so a crate helps a young puppy to learn to hold, strengthening the bowel and bladder muscles. That makes house training your puppy much easier for you and your furbaby.

Puppies can be overwhelmed in new surroundings in a busy household, and a crate provides a place of safety and security where your little guy can sleep and chill out when he wants to.

A Place Of Safety

A cozy crate can help your dog to self-soothe and handle anxiety during stressful situations, such as thunderstorms or fireworks.

Loyal dogs, such as Goldendoodles, can be territorial and clingy. So, providing those animals with a crate to protect rather than having your pet feel that he has to defend your entire home can make it easier for your Doodle to relax, helping to prevent separation anxiety.

Keep It Clean!

Goldendoodles love to spend time outdoors, enjoying hiking, hunting, and especially swimming excursions with their owners.

Although that’s all great fun, those activities can make for a mucky pup! Crate training can help to confine your dog in transit and again when you arrive home until you get a chance to clean him up. That saves dirty paw prints all over your

Easy Transport

Many Goldendoodle owners enjoy taking their furry friends on road trips with them.

Crate training makes long journeys much safer and pleasant for both dogs and humans, as the dog will settle down to sleep without distracting the driver. If you’re a frequent flyer, it’s essential that your dog is crate-trained, as that’s how he’ll travel on airplanes.

Senior Goldendoodles

Senior Goldendoodles can sometimes develop health conditions that cause problems such as incontinence or poor mobility. At that point in their lives, senior pups appreciate a special place to take frequent naps and rest their joints.

Also, a crate can prevent the nighttime pacing that’s caused by canine cognitive dysfunction.

In Emergencies

In emergency situations, crate training can be invaluable.

If you need to evacuate your family and your pet quickly and efficiently, having a crate-trained dog can save crucial time. In a chaotic situation, your dog will be less likely to run away and get injured or lost. Also, in areas where extreme weather conditions occur regularly, dogs must be restrained in a crate to accompany their owners in shelters.

What Size Crate For A Goldendoodle?

Goldendoodles come in a range of different sizes, so you need to buy the right size of crate for your dog.

Potty Training

Miniature Golden Doodle Puppy and Potty Training

If you’re potty training your Goldendoodle puppy, you might choose to use a crate to help with that process.

Puppies should not have sufficient space to curl up in one corner of the crate and pee in another

If the puppy’s crate is too big, you’ll hamper his potty training. Conversely, the crate shouldn’t be so small that the puppy is cramped and can’t move around comfortably. Ideally, your pet should be able to stand upright, turn around, lie down, and sit down in his crate.

Choose a type of crate that has a removable plastic tray in case of accidents.

Space To Grow

Goldendoodles are typically not fully grown until they reach between 12.5 and 16 months of age. In fact, some of the larger Doodles don’t completely stop growing until they are around two years old.

Remember that your puppy will grow as he matures. So, as your pup gets bigger, he’ll need more space. The best way to avoid having to buy multiple crates is to choose one that has divider panels. That way, you can extend the crate when you need to.

Stretch Or Snuggle?

Since your Doodle is going to use his crate as a cozy den for relaxing and sleeping, your pet’s preferred sleeping position is an important consideration when choosing a crate for him.

Some dogs like to sprawl flat out and stretch their legs, taking up as much space as possible. Other pups prefer to snuggle up, using the sides of the crate to lean against to provide a feeling of security.

So, you need to choose a crate that accommodates your dog’s preference.

Bottom line: your Goldendoodle’s crate should be a place they love and want to go to when it’s time to rest.

How To Measure Your Goldendoodle For A Crate

As we’ve mentioned, your dog should be able to lie down in his crate. So, to work out what size crate you need, you’ll need to measure your dog’s height and length.

  • Measure your Doodle’s length from his nose to the tip of his tail. Add between 2 to 4 inches to the overall length of the dog, depending on his size.
  • Measure your dog’s height from the top of his head to the ground when the dog is sitting. Add 4 inches to the dog’s height.

Remember, when in his crate, your Goldendoodle should be able to:

  • Lie down flat and stretch out his paws
  • Stand upright without hitting his head on the top of the crate
  • Turn around easily

The crate must not be so big that your dog has enough space to sleep at one end and use the other end to relieve himself.

What Different Types of Dog Crates Are There?

Now that you know what size dog crate to buy, you’ll need to decide what kind of crate is most suitable for your needs.

There are four main kinds of dog crates:

  • Wire crates
  • Wooden kennels
  • Fabric, soft crates
  • Plastic crates

Most of these crate types have multiple uses. Let’s find out more.

Wire Crates

Wire crates, are probably the most versatile kind of dog crate that you can buy. These crates are made from sturdy metal wire that allows the dog to see their surroundings. Many owners find that their puppy feels extra secure if the crate is covered with a blanket to create a cozy den.

You can choose from a variety of options, including multiple and single-door styles, and these crates are usually foldable for easy storage and transport. Wire crates generally have a plastic tray in the bottom, making clean-up quick and simple. Also, wire crates allow for excellent airflow, which is essential during warm weather.

Most styles of wire crates come with dividers that allow you to resize the crate as your Goldendoodle puppy grows. Also, if you need to, you can use a wire crate for transporting your Goldendoodle in your vehicle.

The main downside of wire crates is that they are not completely escape-proof, especially when used with the super-bright Doodle. Also, wire crates can be quite noisy when the dog moves around inside, which might disturb you at night, depending on where you have the crate in your home.

Plastic Crates

Ferplast Rigid Carrier

Plastic dog crates are more suitable for travel than for use in your home, and most airlines accept plastic crates.

However, a heavy-duty plastic crate is lightweight, portable, easy to clean, and can keep even the most determined escaped artist safely contained. Also, if you live in a cold climate, a plastic crate provides excellent insulation to keep your Goldendoodle nice and cozy.

Plastic crates have a few downsides in that they can’t be folded, they don’t give your dog much of a view, and ventilation is poor.

Furniture-Style Wooden Crates

If you want your dog’s crate to blend with your home décor, you might want to choose a wooden crate.

Wooden crates come in a variety of designs and colors, including end tables and side tables. Your Goldendoodle will find it very difficult to escape from this style of crate, and they look great. However, wooden crates do have a few disadvantages, including:

  • Expensive
  • Can be damaged by chewers
  • Difficult to clean
  • Tend to absorb moisture and hold odors and stains

So, if you have a Goldendoodle puppy, you should wait until he has finished teething and chewing and is fully potty trained before you invest in a smart wooden crate. Look for a crate that has a removable plastic tray to protect the wood in case of toileting accidents.

Fabric Crates

Soft Sided Pet Carrier with Steel Frame

Fabric crates are useful for travel and are often used by dog owners who want to take their pets with them on road trips.

These crates are usually foldable for easy storage, are lightweight for excellent portability, and many designs are also washable for quick and easy cleanup. Fabric crates generally have multiple zippered panels so that you can access your pet easily, and there’s often a mesh front for good ventilation and so that your pet can see his surroundings.

The main downside to a soft-sided crate is that they are extremely easy to escape from and can easily be destroyed by chewing.

In Conclusion

I hope you enjoyed our guide to choosing the perfect crate for your Goldendoodle. Please share the article if you found it helpful.

Crate training your Goldendoodle puppy is incredibly important for his future safety and security. A crate provides your dog with a safe retreat from stressful situations, makes a cozy den where he can sleep, and a crate is invaluable when potty training a Goldendoodle puppy. If you enjoy traveling and you want to take your dog on road trips with you and your family, your pet will be much safer and more comfortable in a crate than riding loose in your car.
