We were right! Puppies of all breeds, including Goldendoodles, Labradoodles, and smaller breeds, such as Shih-Poos and Cavapoos, were all selling for less. In some cases, prices were up to $1,000 less than they had been a few weeks earlier!

Unfortunately, I know from talking to local rescues that they’ve seen an increase in the number of dogs being surrendered for rehoming.

That’s mostly because people have returned to work and don’t have the time for a dog in their lives now. In addition, dogs left home alone can be very destructive, and cases of severe separation anxiety are increasing.

However …

Still, with puppy prices falling, many puppy farms are going out of business because the demand for their pups is no longer there, and their cheap prices are not as competitive as they were a few months ago.

How To Spot A Puppy Mill

There are quite a few red flags to watch out for, any of which could indicate that the breeder is actually a puppy farm.

• Has the seller posted multiple ads online, and do those ads offer multiple breeds? Puppy farms often do that.

• Generic, vaguely worded adverts that are copied word-for-word are often posted by puppy mills. Check the pictures of the puppies in the advert. Often, puppy mills use old photos that they’ve lifted from the internet to their adverts. The puppy you’ll buy is most likely not one of those in the picture!

• Puppies must be at least eight weeks old before being vaccinated. If the ad states that the puppies are younger than that and are vaccinated, it’s most likely a puppy farm advert.

• Will the breeder let you see the whole litter or where they were born? Puppy farms often want to meet you at a public location, such as a gas station or shopping mall car park rather than welcome you to their breeding operation.
