When we bought our Doodle, we weren’t looking for a fancy color or a particular coat type. We just wanted a cute puppy that we could have fun with and welcome into a loving, forever home.
Now, although I’ve had many dogs over the years, I’ve never owned a Doodle. But I liked the sound of a dog that wouldn’t shed much since my OH has a slight pet allergy, and I don’t much enjoy vacuuming. (My previous dog was a German Shepherd Border Collie crossbreed, and she was an Olympic standard shedder!)
So, when we went to see our little bundle of joy, we were delighted to choose a black puppy with a bright white blaze on his chest and a sweet little white goatee beard. However, our puppy’s dad is silver-gray in color, and we were warned that our puppy’s coat could change color as he matured.
Black is a pretty common color for Goldendoodles, so we paid an average kind of price for our puppy. Everything went well, and our new addition settled in well, taking socialization and basic training in his stride and proving to be a wonderful little guy to have around.
When our puppy was a few months old, I took him to have his first professional grooming experience. As the pup’s face was getting rather shaggy, I asked the groomer to tidy it up so that he could see out from underneath all that hair. When I collected Raffles after his wash and brush up, I was astonished to see that his face was dark gray!
The groomer reckons that when our puppy changes his puppy coat, and his adult coat comes through, he could very well be gray like his father! That’s so exciting! Gray is a harder color to come by in this dog breed, so if we do finish up with a rarity, that would be great.
However, we love our little guy to bits, no matter what color he is, and we wouldn’t swap him for the world!
But the point of telling you about my own experience is to warn you that your puppy could easily change color as he enters adulthood, leaving you with a dog of a totally different color.
In fact, the process of changing color in Doodles is commonly referred to as “clearing” the coat, which is useful to know if you enjoy entering trivia quizzes or completing crossword puzzles!
