Choosing Goldendoodle Puppy Breeders In Michigan

Fun candid moments in the life of a standard poodle puppy

Before you start your search for a Goldendoodle puppy to welcome into your life, there are a few things to know about choosing a puppy breeder.

Avoid Puppy Mills!

When you buy a Goldendoodle puppy, you should expect to pay upward of $2,000.

If you’re offered a puppy for a cheaper price than that, don’t buy it! There’s a good chance it’s being sold by a puppy mill or backstreet breeder. The puppy’s parents most likely won’t be health-screened, and the puppy could have genetic health problems.

Buyer Beware!

A good friend of mine recently fell victim to a puppy mill that was advertising their pups on the internet. The seller placed their advert on a popular pet buy/sell website and included lots of pretty puppy pictures and cute descriptions.

Unfortunately, my friend was so beguiled by the snapshots that she didn’t do any research into the breeder. When she told me how much the breeder wanted for the puppies, I was surprised. The price seemed remarkably cheap for Goldendoodles!

My puppy mill radar was immediately activated! The more I heard about this breeder, the more worried I became for my friend. So, I got busy on the net, looking for reviews and taking a closer look at their website.

It turned out the seller was using puppy photos that appeared elsewhere on the web on multiple websites! Further digging revealed some dreadful reviews left by people who had visited the kennels and were horrified by the conditions they found there.

I contacted my friend to tell her what I’d learned, but I was too late, and she’d already bought her puppy home. Fortunately, the pup was in good health and, so far, hasn’t shown any signs of genetic health conditions. So, my fingers are crossed for her and her gorgeous furbaby.

Breeder Reputation

A well-established breeder who has been operating for many years will have a good reputation. Ask local kennels, vets, and dog trainers for their recommendations. It’s also worth asking local social media for their experiences.

Visit The Breeder

Ideally, you want to visit the breeder at their kennels or home to meet the puppy’s parents. All the dogs should be in good condition, friendly, and happy.

There are also other ethical breeders you can visit from other nearby states in case you can’t find an available puppy in Michigan. Check out these posts:

Health Screening

Good breeders have their parent dogs health-screened for genetic health problems that could be passed on to their puppies.

Check that both the puppy’s parents have been screened for the following health conditions:

  • Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (O.F.A.) hip certification
  • O.F.A. heart clearance
  • Canine Eye Registry Foundation eye certification
  • O.F.A. knee clearance
  • D.N.A. testing for Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA)

In Conclusion

Did you enjoy our list of 7 excellent Goldendoodle breeders in Michigan? If you loved it, please remember to share.

When buying any puppy, always check the breeder’s reputation, visit the kennels, and ask for testimonials and references from previous buyers before you commit to buying a puppy.

Most good breeders have a limited number of pups available each year, and there’s usually a waiting list. Steer clear of breeders that always have a large stock of available puppies for sale at rock-bottom prices, as that’s a clear sign that the person advertising is from a puppy mill.
